SPNI resolves carriage row, restores channels on major cable networks
Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) is learnt to have resolved its dispute with GTPL Hathway, DEN Networks and Hathway Cable & Datacom, paving the way for its channels to return across the cable networks within a week of being switched off on June 10.
Highly placed sources said that Sony’s channels have returned on these top distribution platform operators (DPOs), following the settlement of the dispute.
The channels had gone off-air on the three cable networks after the parties failed to close fresh distribution agreements under Sony’s latest Reference Interconnect Offer (RIO).
The dispute was primarily over commercial terms and subscription payouts. Sony had been seeking improved revenue realisation from the operators, arguing that some cable networks were paying lower subscription fees than the previous year despite stronger performance of its Hindi general entertainment portfolio.
According to industry sources, the broadcaster had pointed to the traction generated by marquee properties such as Kaun Banega Crorepati and other Hindi GEC programming while pushing for better terms from distributors.
The blackout had raised concerns among subscribers, particularly with the India-England cricket series scheduled to begin on Sony Sports Network from July 1. A prolonged disruption would have affected access to Sony’s entertainment channels as well as its premium sports offering.
While the financial terms of the settlement could not be ascertained, the quick restoration indicates that both sides moved to avoid a prolonged blackout ahead of the cricket series and other key programming.
The resolution also comes at a time when Sony is renegotiating distribution arrangements across platforms.
The broadcaster remains locked in a separate legal dispute with DTH operator Tata Play, which is currently pending before the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). BestMediaInfo
