VFX industry shakeup

The dramatic closure of Technicolor VFX has indeed culminated long-standing challenges.

Technicolor, founded in 1912, has been a pioneer in cinema technology, known for its work on iconic films like The Wizard of Oz and The Jungle Book. It operated major VFX studios such as MPC, The Mill, and Mikros Animation, with operations in North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond.

The company faced difficulties recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global industries. It underwent costly separations and restructuring efforts, which added to its financial strain. Also, the Hollywood writers’ strike in 2023 significantly reduced customer orders, causing severe cash flow pressures.

Despite efforts to secure new investors, Technicolor could not find viable financial support, leading to a court recovery procedure in France. The company began shutting down operations worldwide, affecting thousands of employees across the US, UK, India, and other locations.

The closure is one of the most significant in the VFX industry in over a decade, comparable to Rhythm & Hues’s bankruptcy. Over 10,000 artists worldwide lost their jobs, with specific impacts in India where more than 3,000 workers were affected.

The combination of these factors—financial struggles, operational challenges, and external industry pressures—culminated in Technicolor VFX’s abrupt and dramatic closure, marking a significant shift in the global visual effects landscape.
