Shared channels by private sports broadcasters with Prasar Bharati widened

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has widened the scope of the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007. MIB issued a notification on May 9, 2022 furnishing a fresh list of sporting events of national importance that have to be shared by private sports broadcasters with Prasar Bharati. This is in addition to Summer Olympics, Special Olympics, and Paralympics.

Sporting events considered of national importance:

  1. All Olympics Games
  2. Commonwealth Games
  3. Asian Games
  4. Events relating to the following sports:

A. Cricket

  1. All official One-Day, Twenty-20 and Test matches played by the Indian Men’s and Women’s Cricket Team and all International Cricket Council Test matches featuring India;
  2. Semi-finals and finals of International Cricket Council Men’s and Women’s One-Day International World Cup;
  3. Semi-finals and finals of International Cricket Council Men’s and Women’s Twenty-20 World Cup;
  4. All Semi-finals and finals of International Cricket Council Champions Trophy (One Day);
  5. All Semi-finals and finals of International Cricket Council World Test Championship;
  6. Semi-finals and finals of International Cricket Council Men’s and Women’s Asia Cup (Twenty -20 and One-Day International) ; and
  7. India playing matches, Semi-finals and finals of Under-19 World Cup.

B. Tennis

  1. Davis Cup-All matches featuring India;
  2. Grand Slam Tournaments,-Finals of Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and all matches featuring Indian player from quarter-finals onwards; and
  3. Grand Slam Tournaments, – All such matches featuring Indian player in men’s doubles, Women’s doubles or Mixed doubles from quarter-finals onwards.

C. Hockey

  1. World Cup – All matches featuring India and semi-finals and finals;
  2. Champions Trophy – All matches featuring India and finals;
  3. Indira Gandhi Gold Cup for Women-Semi-finals and finals;
  4. Hockey India Sub-Junior National Championship and Hockey India Academy National Championship;
  5. Hockey Men’s Junior Men World Cup*;
  6. Sultan Azlan Shah Cup- All matches featuring India, Semi-finals and finals; and
  7. International Hockey Federation (FIH) – Hockey Pro League matches.

D. Football

    1. World Cup – Opening match, Quarter finals, Semi-finals and finals;
    2. Asia Cup – All matches featuring India and semi-finals and finals;
    3. Santosh Trophy – Semi-finals and finals;
    4. Asian Women’s Football Cup*;
    5. Under-17 Federation Internationale de Football Association Women’s World Cup*; and
    6. World Cup (Under – 17) – Opening match, Quarter finals, Semi-finals and finals.

E. Badminton

    1. All England Open Badminton Championship – All matches featuring Indian players, Semi- finals and finals; and
    2. Badminton World Federation World Cup Championship – All matches featuring Indian players, semi-finals and finals.

F. Kabaddi

  1. World Cup – All matches featuring India, semi-finals and finals.

G. Khelo India Games

    1. Khelo India Games;
    2. Khelo India School Games;
    3. Khelo India Youth Games;
    4. Khelo India University Games;
    5. Khelo India Games for differently abled persons
    6. Khelo India Games for Indigenous Sports; and
    7. Khelo India Winter Games.

H. Other Events

        1. International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup Event*;
        2. Commonwealth Shooting Championship*;
        3. Commonwealth Archery Championship*; and
        4. International events organized by National Sports Federations recognized by the Government of India.

* Only when India is the host country.
