Spotify VP and global co-head of music Marian Lee Dicus is leaving the company to lead Netflix marketing for the U.S. and Canada, Variety has confirmed.
Dicus will join Netflix in July 2021 as VP of U.S./Canada marketing, reporting to Bozoma Saint John, the marketing vet who joined Netflix as global CMO last August. In the new role, Dicus will work closely with Michelle Slavich, VP of U.S./Canada publicity at Netflix.
Reporting to Dicus will be Shelly Gillyard, VP of U.S. series marketing, a former longtime Nickelodeon exec who joined Netflix from Nike in March 2021; and Jonathan Helfgot, who was recently promoted to VP of original films marketing.
In a statement to Variety, Saint John said: “Marian is an exceptional marketer, with a diverse background of experiences from which she brings a unique and intuitive approach to strategic and creative marketing. Shelly has a spectacular track record of driving conversations; and now with her expertise, she’ll be able to give us a fresh and vibrant perspective on all the elements of our marketing channels that will amplify our series business. Jonathan has been an excellent and consistent leader within our film team. He is well-respected by his peers and has abundant enthusiasm for the future — that’s a winning combination. I couldn’t be more excited to have this team lead our US marketing team as we go forward.”
A rep for Spotify confirmed that Dicus’ counterpart, Jeremy Erlich, will become the streaming giant’s sole head of music.
Dicus joined Spotify nearly eight years ago as head of U.S. consumer marketing and has risen steadily through the ranks ever since. In 2018, she was appointed global head of artist and label services before being elevated in February 2020 to VP and global co-head of music. At Spotify, she was responsible for artist marketing and all industry support and partnerships.
Dicus and Ehrlich have been scheduled to be keynote speakers at A2IM’s Indie Week, taking place virtually from June 14-17.
Before joining Spotify in 2013, Dicus held marketing roles at online retailer Gilt Groupe; Condé Nast, including head of integrated marketing at Vogue; and J. Crew. She began her career at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a management consultant. Born and raised in L.A., Dicus holds a B.A. from Columbia Universit. She currently live in New York City with her husband and two children.
Helfgot leads the Netflix team working with cross-functional partners to introduce the streamer’s films to a global audience. Before joining Netflix in 2018, he was EVP, worldwide marketing for 20th Century Fox Films, where he oversaw marketing strategies across all Fox, Fox 2000, Blue Sky, Marvel, Chernin Entertainment and New Regency titles. Helfgot previous served as president of marketing for Open Road Films and was founder and managing partner of Rec Room, an original and branded content studio.
Gillyard previously worked at Nike, where she spent the last two years as senior director Catalyst brand management for North America. Prior to Nike, she spent two decades at Nickelodeon where she had various marketing roles, the last of which was EVP talent, music and events. Variety
