SK Telecom unveils Gasan AI data center, GPUaaS service

SK Telecom announced on Jan. 13 the launch of its new AI cloud service, SK Telecom GPUaaS (Graphics Processing Unit as a Service). To launch the new service, it has built a new data center in Seoul, the Gasan AI Data Center (AIDC), which was officially opened on Dec. 30 last year. This significant development marks a major step in SK Telecom’s strategy to establish a robust AI infrastructure across South Korea.

The Gasan AIDC is designed to provide an optimized environment for high-density GPU server operations, boasting a power density per rack of 44kW. This facility is a cornerstone of SK Telecom’s AI Infrastructure Super Highway strategy, which aims to build a nationwide network of AI data centers, GPUaaS, and edge AI solutions.

In collaboration with the U.S. company Lambda, SK Telecom’s GPUaaS service is based on the NVIDIA GPU H100, one of the highest-performing GPUs available in Korea. This service allows corporate customers to select the number of GPUs and the duration of their usage according to their specific AI service needs. The flexible pricing model is based on the contract period, the number of GPUs, and the billing method, making it an attractive option for businesses with varying AI workloads.

The GPUaaS service offers short-term usage options, such as one to two months, and provides customized package configurations, including dedicated servers, firewalls, and dedicated lines. Additionally, the service can be integrated with public clouds, enabling customers to leverage SK Telecom’s GPU computing power while maintaining their existing cloud services.

An SK Telecom official highlighted the flexibility and security of the service, stating, “Customers can use their own GPUs for stable AI learning and inference, and security can be enhanced by utilizing firewalls and dedicated lines. Even if customers’ AI workloads increase rapidly, they can add GPUs to dedicated servers, reducing the burden of additional facility investments.”

The launch of GPUaaS has already garnered significant interest, with more than 100 companies inquiring about the service before its official debut. This high level of interest underscores the growing demand for scalable and flexible AI infrastructure solutions in various industries.

Kim Myung-guk, a representative from SK Telecom, emphasized the strategic importance of the launch, saying, “The launch of GPUaaS is significant in establishing SK Telecom as a key player in AI infrastructure. We will build it as a GPU farm to enhance the nation’s AI competitiveness.”

To commemorate the launch, SK Telecom is offering a 20% discount on subscription prices for about two months until the end of February. The company also plans to conduct events such as a GPU replacement compensation program and cloud cost optimization consulting. BusinessKorea
