It’s been over three months since the government of India banned a host of Chinese apps. The list included Bytedance’s wildly popular app TikTok. However, it seems like the India ban hasn’t had too much impact on the Chinese app’s revenue stream. As per a report by Sensor Tower, TikTok raked in $130.5 million in worldwide user spending in September. TikTok was the highest-grossing non-gaming app on Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
The report further revealed that compared to last year in September, TikTok made 7.9 times more money. What’s interesting to note is that a whopping 89% of user spending on TikTok came from China. US accounted for 6% whereas Turkey contributed 1%. The numbers do look impressive despite the India ban as it was a critical market for the company.
Having said that, it’s not as if TikTok hasn’t been impacted by its prolonged absence in India. As per data released by Sensor Tower in April 2020 — when the app was thriving in India — TikTok had been downloaded more than 2 billion times globally across both the App Store and Google Play Store.
India isn’t the only country where TikTok has been in troubled waters. The US government too has had ‘issues’ with the app and president Donald Trump wanted to ban the app unless certain conditions were met. A US court blocked the attempt to ban the app and TikTok has breathing space till November.
In India, however, the future of the app remains uncertain. A slew of TikTok ‘wannabe’ apps have taken over and the likes of Instagram too have launched features to replace TikTok in the Indian market. TOI
