T&M Instruments: Modest activity returning

The test & measurement instrument industry had a reasonably good year with a sales turnover of Rs. 14.5 crore for the broadcast sector in 2008-09. The dependency of this industry on Doordarshan is declining gradually as new channels are being introduced.

The Test & Measurement instruments market for the broadcast industry is estimated at Rs. 14.5 crore in 2008-09. Tektronix dominates this segment with sales of Rs.10.5 crore. Other aggressive players are Harris (markets brand Videotek), AGIV (markets brand Leader), and Horizon Global. These companies together account for the balance Rs. 4 crore. Other players include Aplab, Agilent, Maxpeak, Micronova Impex, Rohde & Schwarz, and Richardson Electronics.

Segment-wise the industry may be broadly divided into instruments for the video industry (waveform monitors, rasterisers and dual Sync Pulse Generator switch change-overs), spectrum analyzers (primarily for DSNG vans and DTH services), logic analyzers, audio analyzers, and oscilloscopes.

Many new channels are being introduced. Each channel at least sets up a studio, a PCR (project control room), and playout system, thus requiring two to four waveform monitors and vectors with in-built monitors, each with investment ranging between Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh.

As the industry places additional constraints on budgets, test engineers are being challenged to identify ways to test devices more efficiently than before. These trends help engineers develop faster and more flexible automated test systems while reducing their overall cost of test.

The adoption of software-defined instrumentation is the most significant trend in test and measurement for 2009. Engineers are using software-defined instrumentation to achieve new levels of measurement performance and lower test costs by applying the latest technological advancements in their test systems to meet the demands of new application areas such as wireless and protocol-aware test. Using software-defined instruments, engineers can rapidly reconfigure their test equipment by modifying software algorithms to meet changing test requirements.

The test and measurement industry is struggling to keep up with various challenges like lowering testing costs, an increasing number of versatile test systems and complexities in performance levels crave more cost-effective T&M solutions. Users demand greater functionality and flexibility from their T&M tool and at a cost-effective price.

Key growth drivers are emerging from new delivery mechanisms like IPTV, satellite pay TV, DTH through DVB-S2 and DVB-T. As the deadline to transition to completely digital and HD format approaches, an increase in demand of T&M instruments is expected.

MAJOR PLAYERS

Tektronix

In 2008-09, Tektronix sold 9 numbers of waveform monitors to Doordarshan, with approximate order value of Rs. 65 lakh. One dual SPG switch change-over was procured by Essel Shyam, and one dual SPG switch change-over by Yamuna TV for Bangladesh.

In 2009-10, Tektronix has till date had a sales of 6 numbers of waveform monitors for Doordarshan, and 5 waveform monitors and 1 dual SPG switch change-over for Andhra Jyoti, Hyderabad. Three rasterisers and 1 dual SPG switch change-over has been procured by Benchmark for Pearl Broadcasting (P7 News). Tektronix sold one waveform monitor and one dual SPG switch change-over to Adlabs. This amounts to an approximate total of Rs. 5.75 crore.

The HD Star portable, battery powered, and HD and SD monitor generator provides multi-format functionality and versatility.

AGIV

AGIV represents IWastu and Leader in India. 2008-09 was not a great year for sales. Waveform vectroscopes were sold to Indra TV. The company has submitted multi-format waveform vectroscopes as a part of OB van demo piece to Doordarshan.

Horizon Global

ImageHorizon India represents Horizon U.K and provides a range of digital satellite meters to DTH and ISP industry and digital cable meters to the MSOs. As part of package of the DSNG van tender, the company has quoted its meters to Doordarshan. A new avenue this year has come in the form of procurement of satellite meters by various DD locations at the LPTs. Spectrum analyzers at a unit price of Rs. 4-5 lakhs are normally transported between various locations. These are now shifting to digital satellite meters sourced from Horizon India, priced competitively at unit price ranging between Rs 32000-Rs 35000. The company expects a sale of 100 units of its newly introduced USB+ satellite meters.

Agilent

Agilent, a leading T&M supplier is focused more towards telecom and defense verticals. In broadcast segment the company supplies basic instruments as port testing for the manufacturing domain. The company has recently launched audio analyzers and is upbeat for this segment. The targeted audience is broadcasters including channels, All India Radio and to some extent studios.
