| Professional Cameras: Slow market in 2009 |
| Saturday, 23 January 2010 | |
|
Though the recession diluted the demand in 2009. 2010 is expected to bring some cheer to sales. The professional camera market continued to be on the downslide in 2009. Demand was primarily for competitively priced cameras. It had a direct impact on sales of lens, tripods, camera bags, batteries, chargers and other camera accessories too. Digital cameras are great favorites with broadcasters and professionals due to their advantages of digitization, tape-less workflows, and high definition (HD). Though the recession diluted the demand in 2009, the launch of highly feature-rich cameras at competitive prices for all segments has set the stage for future growth in not just the cinematography segment, but also broadcast television. The ENG and field production sector continued to experience an increasing influx of a large spectrum of tape-less products in HD. While some channels are already ahead of the curve, having adopted HD camera systems, several broadcasters are gearing up to upgrade to digital and HD acquisition products over the next three to four years. Nowadays, professionals have access to a highly evolved digital workflow of products (including ingest, processing, and export) that is compatible with new format cameras. Thanks to the availability of such supporting technologies, the demand for professional digital cameras now does not stop with just HD tape-less recording abilities. The market is likely to see an increasing number of lighter equipment with highly evolved features such as 2K or 4K recording, 3D integration, wireless transmission, and others. More importantly, these features-intensive products are expected to be available at highly competitive prices. Attractive prices have encouraged customers to invest in next-generation technologies. The breakthrough of 2K and 4K cameras at one-third the prices of high-end cameras for digital cinema in 2008 and the subsequent growth in their popularity among professionals have disrupted trends in the professional cameras market. Price-feature combination is gradually becoming an important purchase decision in the previously niche and premium product segment. Though the professional video cameras market is not commoditized yet and customers still value quality over price, there is increasing pressure on vendors to respond with advanced features, at much lower prices than they commanded two to three years ago. Considering that professionals are willing to invest in digital high-resolution products, the increased and faster turnover of products to match this price-feature combination is likely to facilitate greater market expansion and revenue growth. Top vendors have already captured a substantial user base with their wide range of products across all ENG and prosumer segments, but continue to offer their products for the cinema and studio at a much higher premium. For the market to continue launching cutting edge technologies, end-users should be quick to adapt to them and the workflows surrounding them. While the market incumbents continue to upgrade their products in response to customer demands, it is the small emerging vendors that have been at the forefront of product advancements. Therefore, the growth of the market will depend on their ability to sustain their business with continued innovations and aggressive marketing to create awareness in the professional niche segment. In a highly mature market, vendors have to pay attention to not just customer convenience but also innovate with features that can enable customers gain a higher creative edge. For this, larger vendors will need to match the energies and strategy of the smaller vendors to tap the unused market potential. 2010 is expected to bring some cheer to sales. The CommonWealth Games 2010 may provide the requisite impetus. NDTV, IBN7, and Zee TV which had completely frozen procurement for the last two years have started purchasing some spares and some projects seem to be in the anvil. RFQs have been requested by some channels including India TV and TV Today. However, the industry is wary. Earnings are expected to be more from overseas companies, since contracts are directly being issued to the companies/agencies located overseas. Revenue is expected to be from rentals rather than procurement. Major brands for professional cameras include Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Ikegami, Thomson Grass Valley, Hitachi, and JVC. AGIV India Private Limited in 2009 sold 25 units of professional Ikegami cameras, retailed at an average unit price of Rs.10.5 lakhs. The distributor also sold 50 camcorders at an average unit price of Rs. 2.5 lakhs. Major customers were CNBC, with purchase of six cameras, Sakshi TV procuring 14 units and Parliament House buying five cameras. Sony in India is represented by DBI, Telerad, Sun Broadcast, and CMS. This year, DSR PD 170P model was being discontinued; the focus was primarily on HDV format camcorders until Sony introduced DSR PD 177P, which is picking up very fast in entry level camcorder segment. DBI had a sales level of 68 units and CMS had a sales level of 70 units of Sony cameras in the year 2009. Panasonic and Hitachi in India are represented by Visual Technologies India Private Limited. Panasonic had a sales of 334 units of tape-less cameras at a value of Rs. 11.02 crore, and 913 units of tape cameras at a value of Rs. 12.44 crore. In 2009, DD has placed nominal orders for camera chains. A tender was invited for 65 sets of digital EFP camera chains and 27 sets of DVC PRO camcorders with accessories. The order for 27 cameras and tripods was placed on VTIL on December 31, 2009. The order for lens has been placed on AGIV. For the requirement for 65 sets of digital EFP camera chains. The bid is still pending with no orders yet having been placed. Zoom Communications emerged as a major buyer of professional cameras for the year 2009. Zoom Communications procured 60 cameras from Thomson Grass Valley and 15 cameras from Sony. The number of lens procured was 75 and the major suppliers for an equal number of tripods were Cartoni, Miller, and Vinten. Zoom Communications expects to maintain the momentum by procuring more cameras and camera accessories for the next IPL to be held in March 2010. The company rents its equipment for sports events. As high definition cameras begin to roll out in large numbers, cameras are becoming more sophisticated, smaller and less expensive. HD cameras are already broadly used in a variety of situations, and the opportunity for them to have an active role will only continue to expand. It stands to a reason that high performance and affordable cost are similarly being sought in support equipment for the cameras. The new mechanism of the drag system makes for a quantum leap in operatibility when panning or tilting. There is also a significant reduction in the wobbling of the image that occurs with panning at the start of shooting, as well as in the backlash that occurs at the end of panning with innovations in tripod technology brought by major players. The tripod market in India is dominated by Cartoni, Libec, Manfrotto, Miller, O' Connor Engineering, Sachtler, and Vinten. Sachtler sold 105 tripods to its major customers, including TV18, NDTV, and TV Today in the year 2009. The popular models had sales of 50 numbers of FBS6, and 55 numbers of Video25 and Video90. O'Connor's most popular models were 2575, 2060, and 127. It had sales of 90 units of tripods in the year 2009 to its major customers, Prime Focus and Adlabs. Both the brands are marketed by Shashi Enterprises in India. Cartoni, through its distributor Hytech Communications, did a business of Rs. 1.70 crore in the year 2009. The major customers were private broadcasters who bought 62 units of tripods at an approximate value of 1.43 crore. Doordarshan bought 27 units of tripods, amounting to Rs. 27 lakh. Royal Broadcasting represents Manfrotto in the Indian tripod market. They also sell camera bags, batteries, and chargers. Libec, through its distributor Visual Technologies Private Limited, had sales of 1545 tripods, valued at Rs.1.02 crore in 2009. Twelve percent of the market was contributed by regional brands including Cinetec, Mumbai and Supertec, Chennai and together with some Chinese brands, they had sales of approximately 400 units of tripods in the year 2009. As digitization has pushed the growth of professional cameras, camera lens is one of the beneficiaries of this technological advancement. Major brands available are Canon and Fujinon. Conquest markets Fujinon lens in India. The company also sells batteries and chargers from PAG, U.K. Canon Canon is marketed and represented in India by AGIV India Private Limited.
