A roadmap for Indian broadcast industry

The BES Expo continues to provide an opportunity to understand and witness live demonstrations of the latest technology and competitive systems.

Broadcasting industry is at a critical juncture today in view of the fast development in the field of digital techniques and mobile. New technology is enabling the broadcasters to provide additional services. Innovations are also taking place in the field of content creation. The 14th Broadcast Engineers Society (BES) Expo 2008 on terrestrial and satellite broadcasting was held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 23rd-25th February, which saw more than 6000 delegates/visitors both from India and overseas. The Theme of this year's Expo "New Horizons in Broadcasting", aims to formulate a roadmap for the Indian broadcasting industry.

Event Highlights

Technical sessions of DTT, DTH, content creation and management, digital radio, HDTV, and delivery platforms were some of the highlights of the Expo. Over 40 specialist from India and overseas outlined the latest technologies/systems in this seminar.

Conferences. A three-day conference was held which focused on sessions such as

  • DTT in the age of cable and DTH

  • HDTV: Implementation and strategies

  • Content creation and management

  • Diverse delivery platform

  • Evolving technologies - The journey ahead

  • Digital Radio - New experience

  • And Regulatory and Policy issues

Speaking at the event, PS Sundaram, President, BES (India), said, "We are proud to hold the 14th International Conference and Exhibition on terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, which provides a platform for professionals to share knowledge and showcase their offerings. This year, we are expecting nearly 6000 engineers, managers, cinematographers, consultants, entrepreneurs and policy and decision-makers from radio, TV broadcasting organizations as well as studio and post-production units in the private, public and government sectors to visit BES EXPO 2008."

According to Asha Swarup, Secretary, Information & Broadcasting "The Indian entertainment and media industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in India and is projected to grow from an estimated size of Rs. 437 billion in 2006 to Rs. 1 trillion in 2011, with accumulative annual growth rate of 88 percent over the 5 years. This growth has been fuelled mostly because of the good performance of the Indian economy with rising disposable incomes, for increased spending on leisure and entertainment with consumers. On the television industry side, the annual growth rate is projected to be 22 percent and on the radio side it is projected to be at the rate of 28 percent over the 5 years. This unfolds a huge potential for creation of employment opportunities and bringing in huge investments into the sector".

The Indian Entertainment and Media Industry is also one of the sectors which is experiencing rapid technological changes with new modes of delivery of content coming up in the form of IPTV, mobile TV, digitalization, and it is posing a great challenge to the policy makers and regulators to keep pace in terms of laying down a suitable legislative and regulative framework for their orderly growth and conformity with the Indian value systems and taking care of the consumer's interest.

One of the key developments has been the transition from an analog mode of content creation, transmission and distribution to a digitalized mode. This is because the number of advantages that the digital mode offers over the analog is tremendous. The process of digitalization makes it possible to offer a whole range of new applications and makes the conversions of audio, video and date services possible.

Visitor Profile

The visitors at the BES exhibition included engineers, videographers, managers, entrepreneurs, consultants and policy and decision-makers from TV and radio broadcasting organizations, studio and post-production units in the public, private and government sectors; and students and faculty members from institutes offering courses and careers in TV and radio.

ImageOn the key plans of the company for 2008?

We will be focusing more on the IP centric solution so whatever source would come would be IP based in the future. The design or the equipment will now be moving to streaming-based videos. That would be the concept for the broadcast market.

On the major products launched for 2008

Major product is the new network based monitoring system. The box can take in as many sources as needed and distributes to multiple location. So one source that comes in, distributes via the IP to the routers and then to many control rooms. So that gives features such as matrix and cabling.

On the emerging trends in the Indian broadcasting sector

Video on demand, IPTV, and the convergence of the services of our broadcast and telecom companies are some of the emerging trends in the Indian broadcasting market. The telecom companies are planning to foray into broadcasting while the broadcasters would provide content to the telecom players to do the transmission through the teleport. So there will be a convergence of these two industries overlapping each other. They will be moving ahead towards IP streaming. JPEG 2000 can be one of the effective standards and subsequent standard could be MPEG4 once it is decoded.

On the worldwide sales of the company in broadcasting market

The worldwide sales of the company in the broadcasting market should be around Euro 25 million just for broadcast market.

On the future plans for India

We see the broadcast market in India at a developing stage and it is still at its maturing stage. Seeing this we have a wide range of products from low end which can be suitable for small control rooms to high end. We also have range of products for broadcasting companies who are looking for high end products.

Google would like to participate with the broadcasters of India - they are a tremendous group. With all the community stations coming online or coming on the air, it is a great opportunity for the Indian people for Indian broadcasters and Google to participate in this group.

On the emerging trends in the Indian broadcasting industry

The fact that commercialization of radio is taking place; privatization where companies and services can own radio stations and now with the ability to do news and current affairs - just having them approve them this week is very exciting. It will actually change the face of radio in India. Radio is the source of information and entertainment for many people.

On the latest products launched for the FM sector

In India, Google is showing Google radio automation, which is a very successful platform in other parts of the world. It is the No. 1 selling automation system in North America. It's been very successful and Google wants to provide the same level of product in India.

On the Revenue target for 2008

It depends on how well Google does in the market. We actually do not disclose the projections for revenue.

On the expansion plans in India

Google will have vocal representation in India so that we can provide local sales, local services and technical support for the broadcasters of India with respect to radio automation products.

On the future of broadcasting in India

It is very exciting. The fact that companies and individual services can have stake in broadcasting can be able to communicate with the vast population of a great country like India. It is good for

Advertisers - to advertise on Indian radio

Listeners - to enjoy radio and musical formats in addition to news and public affairs

On key growth drivers for Google in India

It is the growth, the fact that India is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Google has a lot to offer to India and India too has a lot to offer to Google as well. We like to be partners in this growth.

Pebble Beach is a relatively new company. The main product launched by the company is the Neptune, which is our automation system which uses modern technology, is completely open and scalable and modular. It is successful ever since the launch of the product. We have already installed the system in more than 40 countries in all continents. We are a single product company.

On the emerging trends in the Indian broadcasting industry

India is slowing transitioning to tapeless environment so people are slowly beginning play more from the video servers. A trend I see is that a lot of people would be archiving because of the availability of all libraries in the betacam tapes that they need to digitize to correct the video files which then need to be archived.

On the major challenges in the broadcasting industry in India

Basically there is a need to have an open platform where we can have a transmission system, where traditional playouts can be possible and streaming for Internet and mobile can be done. People are used to get more content, from TV to cable, to satellite TV and people now want to watch video on Internet and telephones and different media. One of the challenges for the Indian broadcasting industry would the need for more content.

On your expansion plans

The company has opened an office in the US. In India also we have a strong presence as we have got Zee as our main customers, and as we sell here, eventually we will have an office in India too but it will be a long term plan.

We are distributors of Sony, Octopus, Apple, Harris, BAS, and B4M. So the products that are launched by our principals are actually carried forward into our product category. CMS also does R&D for their product types in security space and access control.

On the broadcast division of the company

CMS has acquired two years ago because we feel that broadcast industry has a lot of growth potential and CMS wants to enter all media accounts. We are using NVL as a good vehicle to help us reach that goal. NVL is a strong company and has good brand equity. The broadcast division of CMS provides turnkey solutions for TV satellite channels and their high end application areas such as e-classroom and telemedicine which require video and IT technologies to merge. We also offer AMC and facility management services to satellite channels, production houses, educational institutes and other clients.

On company's expansion plans

Our expansion plans include increasing our principals and collaborate with more companies, increasing our manpower on the streets and creating a one stop solution for media houses so that we not only cover the entire gamut of products that they need but also from the service point of view we can provide for them. CMS conventionally is a services organization. We are integrating NVL into CMS fold where we have 10,000 people who are doing servicing for the IT industry. Likewise, we want to create the same service infrastructure for the broadcasting industry with regards to services.

On your annual targets for 2008

We want to achieve Rs. 40-50 crore in 2008.

On the emerging trends in the broadcasting industry in India

With the influx of the new channels coming in and the influx of several large and small principals looking at India with a very interesting eye, I believe that the sector is growing rapidly. The broadcasting industry seems to be optimistic.

Rtronix Communications Pvt. Ltd.

ImageOn the latest solutions offered by the company

We have designed a flyaway solution in a suitcase for the first time in India. The suitcase contains the entire electronics required for the flyaway applications which includes the video encoder, modem, RF unit and power supply units for power components. The entire thing is packaged in a suitcase which would weigh less than 15 kg. To uplink using this particular terminal, the only additional equipment that is needed is an antenna. The flyaway terminal in Ku band is integrated with portable satellite antenna system iSNG series of AVL technologies and combines RF engineering and product experience with audio video streaming over IP. This terminal is capable of working outdoors without any air conditioning environment. The total power consumption is also very low, around less than 300 W. In my opinion this would be a good solution for the broadcasters since they do not have to limit their operations to DSNG vans.

On the company's targets for 2008

Our target is to manufacture cost effective and easy to carry solutions for the Indian environment. Most of our focus is on contribution networks, making contribution easier for the broadcasters by giving solutions by which they can have easier, faster, and cheaper contribution networks. We use low bandwidth XVD encoders which are capable of working with a bandwidth as low as 1 MHz and it is not just on theory. There are broadcasters in India who are operating this solution at 1 MHz bandwidth. We are going to have variations of the flyaway for other different applications. Presently it is for the video uplink applications. We would be focusing on IP, audio, and even VSAT networks also for voice connectivity. The base product is available and we are going to further modify and develop on this product for other applications.

On the emerging trends in the Indian broadcasting market

An increase in the number of TV channels has led to an increasing demand of DSNG vans. Presently this trend is increasing in India and we have enquiries for DSNG vans. A lot of channels are coming up and the market is expected to further expand. Live contribution and features to the customers is going to be difficult. But broadcasters who are able to provide live contribution and features to customers would succeed in the industry.
