Telemetrics camera control system to support HDTV at Portland's KGW NewsChannel 8

KGW NewsChannel 8 in Portland, Oregon has completed a multi-million dollar upgrade to HDTV in its news production department. Included in the over 500 new products installed was a Telemetrics camera control robotics system, which provides unified camera robotic control capability on a single platform for both the indoor and outdoor camera systems.

CLIU-HFUX 310
The Telemetrics CLIU-HFUX 310 camera control interface unit, with dual camera support, provides interface between Telemetrics control panel and software and the Sony camera fiber interface unit. This configuration allows for camera paint and lens control as well as robotic control of the Telemetrics pan/tilt heads and other robotic devices such as Telemetrics' camera trolley system or televator elevating pedestal. All robotic control signals are sent through the Sony fiber interface. This allows for the remote camera and Telemetrics robotics to be run via fiber optics over very long distances.

A roof-top HD camera was installed in a weatherproof Telemetrics LWP-HOUL heavy duty large camera housing, fitted to a Telemetrics PT-LWP-S3 servo pan/tilt head. The second outdoor HD camera, referred to as the Rose City Sky-Cam, is similarly outfitted and both locations transmit video and receive control signals over fiber with the Telemetrics CLIU-HFUX 310 camera control interface. In the future, KGW plans to move its entire Sky-Cam network of 10 cameras to Telemetrics control.

In the control room, the Telemetrics desk-top CP-R-3A remote control panel, complete with CPS-ST-S studio control system software, operates both the newsroom and the outdoor HD cameras using a dedicated network. The system offers single operator efficient management of studio operations, with such features as storyboard configuration presets and camera grouping. The joystick panel provides trim controls for pan/tilt/zoom and focus, as well as camera iris and master pedestal. This allows the operator to adjust the camera position with smooth, on-air quality precision.

HDR-SR10E and HDR-HC9E high definition handycam camcorders

Sharing advanced imaging technologies from Sony's digital camera line, the HDR-SR10E and HDR-HC9E high definition camcorders incorporate face detection technology for both video and photos. Unlike other Handycam models with face detection, these camcorders allocate more pixels to the image for the best possible picture when people are the subjects.

Other technologies include ClearVid CMOS sensors with Exmor -derived technology that utilizes column analog/digital conversion to minimize picture noise. Together with the high processing speed and noise reduction capability of the BionzTM processing engine and dynamic range optimization, the new camcorders produce high-resolution video and photos with natural color reproduction and rich details. HDR-SR10E records in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound and have newly integrated built-in zoom microphones that zoom the audio along with the video for clear recordings of subjects. They also allow for quick data transfer via USB from the camcorders to compatible devices like DVD burners and recorders.

The 40GB HDR-SR10E camcorder provides extremely long continuous recording time (1920 mode) of nearly five hours. It also features hybrid movie recording on media cards, as well as built-in hard drives. Designed to deliver first-rate video performance with its Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T optics and Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization, the DSC-HC9 presents smooth video and clearer photos. Based on the HDV format for recording of 1920 x 1080 HD video, the new HDR-HC9E camcorder offers compatibility with a wide range of video editing suites. It features Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T optics, a 3.2-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor, and 6.1-megapixel photo capture. This model offers extensive manual controls to meet the demands of advanced videographers, including ‘focus to infinity' spot meter and focus to change exposure; center mark to use as a guide frame in the LCD screen or viewfinder; and peaking to facilitate better focusing by outlining objects with a color line. White balance, shutter speed and focus can also be adjusted manually.
