More than 50,000 industry visitors, conference speakers and delegates, exhibiting staff, and media from more than 140 countries attended IBC2011, the leading tradeshow for professionals engaged in the creation, management, and delivery of broadcasting media and entertainment, from September 8 to 13, 2011. The event's exhibition and thought-provoking conference sessions covered industry's leading issues along with latest developments in broadcasting, mobile TV, IPTV, digital signage, and research and development (R&D). IBC, with its conference and exhibition, provided an array of networking opportunities in a professional and supportive environment. The industry's most senior executives chose IBC's highly respected conference to set and challenge the media agenda. The event played host to a wide array of onsite certified training, product demonstrations, big-screen movie presentations, and the prestigious IBC awards ceremony. Innovations such as the New Technology Campus and IBC Connected World showcased technology at the cutting edge. Featuring R&D from around the world, the Future Zone and New Technology Campus showcased new projects from international research organizations and developers.
The conference covered four selected streams - technology advancements, content creation and innovation, and the business of broadcasting. Some of the hot topics discussed at the conference include connected TV and devices, 3D, sports, and advertising and next generation workflows. An array of keynotes, question and answers, masterclasses, panel discussions, free value-added sessions and IBC's renowned technical papers allowed attendants to focus on practical skills or strategic discussions.
Some of the major companies that showcased their products in the IBC are: Agilent Technologies X-Series signal analyzer for broadcasting measurement applications. Agilent X-Series signal analyzers, ranging from the high-performance (PXA), mid-range (MXA), economy-class (EXA), to the low-cost (CXA), share the same user interface, and code sets. This allows one to move along the performance curve today and tomorrow without rewriting the test code, while optimizing price and performance. All of the X-Series signal analyzers support broadcasting applications for DVB-T/H/T2, Digital Cable TV (DVB-C and J.83/B), ISDB-T/TB/Tmm, DTMB(CTTB), CMMB, ATSC(-M/H), DVB-S/S2, FM/FM Stereo, and DAB/DAB+/T-DMB. Signal generator with signal studio software for broadcasting receiver test. Agilent provides validated cost-effective signal creation for multiple digital video/audio formats based on its signal generator hardware (PSG, ESG, and MXG) and signal studio for digital video and broadcast radio software (N7623B and N7611B). Based on the high-performance of Agilent signal generator, it can generate accurate, easy-to-configure reference signals for digital video or audio receiver test. Furthermore, it can add real-time AWGN or phase impairment to validate receiver sensitivity, and C/N performance tests. Full performance tests are supported with N5106A PXB channel simulator.AGIV (representing FOR-A)Virtual Studio System. FOR-A's VRCAM2 Sensorless Virtual Studio is a sensorless system. Its setup and operation are extremely easy. Its picture quality as well as chroma key quality are also first rate. Another important feature of VRCAM2 is that not only does it emphasize its sensorless features, it is also possible to include up to two sensor cameras in the system. On-air graphics system called SmartStudio can provide on-air graphics (real time CG), clip recording, character generator, and picture-in-picture capability. It can also provide virtual studio as an option. SmartStudio can be operated with any FOR-A switcher; however, HVS-300HS and/or HVS-350HS are the best choice.VFC-7000 Flash Eye Variable Frame Camera. With VFC-7000, a super-slow motion live picture at 700 pictures per second can be seen in 3D. At IBC 2011, a new auto iris function of VFC-7000 was unveiled, along with a fiber optic encoder and decoder. LTR-100HS/LTR-120HS Archive Recorders and MediaConcierge. The LTR-100HS recorder and LTR-120HS archive recorders can conquer over 24 hours of recording at 100 Mbps with only one tape. LTR-100HS comes with a Final Cut Pro 7 and AVID Media Composer 5.5 that highlights its partial retrieval function. The new LTR-120HS archive recorder is based on an AVC-hitra codec with OP-la. It has OP-Atom-lo-OP-la conversion function so that OP-Atom format files can be recorded into LTO-5 tape. Also, the LTR-120HS has a partial retrieval function, allowing partially retrieved O-Pla files to be converted to OP-Atom format. It also has an ingest system with ‚Ä®an MBP-100SX MXF clip server ‚Ä®and baseband converter as well as an MBP-100MP multi-format player in MXF. Frame Rate Converters. The ever popular FRC-8000 was shown together with various options, such as a touch control panel, web control, and DolbyE encoder and decoder. As a new HD frame rate converter, a file-based FRC was also demonstrated so that within MXF file format, standard conversion can be done solely by software. Also, another little frame rate converter, the UFM-30FRC, was introduced and demonstrated at the FOR-A booth. The UFM-30FRC, a module-based product within the UFM-series, has motion compen¬?sation capability, so that moving captions in particular, such as crawl and roll captions, can be smoothly frame-rate converted. Input and output signals covered include HD-SDI, SD-SDI, and analog compos¬?ite, while format conversion between SD (525i/625i) and HD (720P/1080i/1080PsF), as well as between HD (720P. 10801.1080PsF) and HD (720P/1080i/1080PsF) are also covered. The UFM-30FRC is a perfect tool for network, production and post-production, and newsroom applications, as its low price point can definitely help meet low budget requirements.FA-9500 Processor. Many customers throughout the world have already discovered its true performance, versatile functions, and economical price point and its user base is steadily increasing. At IBC 2011, the FA-9500 was shown with a new FA-9500 change over option. The FA-9500 has two independent outputs. The FA-9500 option continuously monitors two inputs simultaneously so that when one input is detected with a black signal or CRC error signal (or even non-standard SDI signal), for example, it automatically switches to the oilier input signal. Moreover, even when embedded audio is detected as an incorrect signal, the FA-9500 can change over to the other input signal automatically.Low Light Noise Reducer. The new low light noise reducer was also shown at IBC 2011. Frequently, there are cases in which live cameras set for traffic control, security surveillance, and in weather watch systems encounter too much noise on live picture feeds at night due to low light conditions. The new noise reducer can reduce the effect of this type of noise generated from low light conditions. It covers HD-SDI, SD-SDI, and analog composite input signals. Noise reduction performance is very impressive, as well as having an affordable and impressive price point.HANABI Switchers. FOR-A's HANABI switchers HVS-300HS 1ME and HVS-350HS 1.5 m was showcased, together with an FVW-500 video writer, MFR-1616 16x16 routing switcher, MV-3200 multiviewer, and Mica sports recorder from Abekas. The most important switcher this time was the new HVS-4000HS 2ME, 2.5ME, and 3ME HANABI. At IBC, a 2MB with 24-input OU and a 3ME with 32-input OU was introduced together with an MFR-5000 routing switcher and MV-3200 multiviewer. The main features of the HVS-4000HS include a maximum of 48 inputs and 24 outputs; HD and SD inputs simultaneously accepted and mixed using an up-down cross conversion option; maximum of 18 keyers with 4 keyers per ME as standard; up to 2DSKs can be installed in an AUX bus as an option so that captions can be superimposed onto AUX outputs; and combiner function, which allows DVEs to be combined before ME bus.Multiviewers. FOR-A showcased the MV-3200 and MV-42HS multiviewers at IBC 2011. The new MV-42HS covers HD-SDI and SD-SDI inputs, and HD-SDI and DVI outputs. It is a very small and compact unit with AC adaptor operation. Conax AS Contego Unite unified solution for all content distribution. Conax Contego Unite enhances the Conax Contego unified platform with support for over-the-top (OTT) content delivery and maximizing multi-device reach. Conax Contego Unite utilizes multi-DRM support enabling the best-suited security solution for any type of client devices. The main features of the product include comprehensive protection for distribution of pay-TV content; smooth delivery of premium content over both managed and OTT networks; integration with multi-DRM support for extensive device reach, eliminating the need to download specific security clients for additional types of devices; and enabling TV operators to monetize the OTT scenario, through support for new services and devices, optimizing content protection and preventing churn. Digital Rapids Transcode Manager 2.0 powered by Kayak. Built on the groundbreaking new Kayak application platform, version 2.0 of the enterprise-class Digital Rapids Transcode Manager software combines outstanding quality, intelligent automation and exceptional performance for transforming high volumes of media between dozens of acquisition, production, archive, and distribution formats. Transcode Manager 2.0 features new process automation capabilities. The included Kayak Designer allows users to visually define sophisticated, decision-based media processing flows with rich metadata support. Processes from video and audio manipulations and compression to monitoring and publishing can be easily combined into simple or complex workflows with immediate visual feedback. Cloud transcoding support enables on-demand, elastic resource expansion without the capital expenditure and time-consuming effort of provisioning of additional local physical systems. StreamZ Live multiscreen encoders. The StreamZ Live family of encoders delivers high quality, reliability and flexibility in dedicated configurations for live multiscreen applications. StreamZ Live encoders are available with a broad range of encoding formats to reach desired platforms and devices, from Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight and more on the Web to IPTV set-top boxes, mobile phones and tablets. StreamZ Live can output streams in multiple formats, resolutions, and bit rates simultaneously, letting the user target multiple audiences from a single system. Select models including StreamZHD Live ABR and StreamZ Live IP ABR support adaptive streaming technologies including Microsoft IIS smooth streaming, Adobe HTTP dynamic streaming, and Apple HTTP live streaming. Ericsson Change agent vision and solutions for future of TV. Ericsson demonstrated how its end-to-endless TV vision and solutions help content owners to maximize the value of their content and enable operators to deploy multi-platform delivery networks that enable blended multiscreen consumer TV experiences. In addition to announcing new products that further enhance its award-winning portfolio, Ericsson used IBC to demonstrate its clear leadership in advanced video compression, content management and workflow, back office and delivery solutions, Internet video caching and distribution, and its rich, open suite of enablers for creating unique consumer experiences. Ericsson showcased a number of solutions that enable content owners to capture, exchange, distribute and process their assets, and to give consumers the content they want on all the devices they own including the Watchpoint content management system, Ericsson's Voyager II DSNG (digital satellite news gathering) with new JPEG-2000 format capability and the multi-format contribution encoder and professional receivers. Visitors to Ericsson's IBC booth witnessed a range of TV network solutions including the new combined hardware and software solutions for linear multiscreen TV processing, Ericsson's media delivery management system, a new generation of on-demand back office platform, as well as demonstrations of the Ericsson media delivery network. Grass Valley Unique 3G camera connectivity system. Grass Valley unveiled a unique system which eliminates the triax/fiber problem, without compromising quality or operational flexibility. Adding to Grass Valley's uniquely powerful camera control system and diagnostics, it is already transforming operations for some of the world's leading outside broadcast companies, and not just because 3G triax extends the range of conventional triax by 25 percent, up to 1500 meters (4921 feet). Now Grass Valley has launched three more complementary products. Key to transformation is the 3G twin base station, which supports both 3G triax and single-mode (dark) fiber connections. If the operator needs to use triax connectivity, the camera cables plug directly into the base station and the full functionality of 3G triax is unleashed. By combining the characteristics of fiber and triax with 3G transmission, for the first time a triax truck can cover long-distance events such as golf or skiing, using simple dark fibers to the converter and triax from that point to the cameras, which can still be up to 1500 meters (4921 feet) away from the LDK 4426. Integration of the new Karrera Video Production Center with Ignite Automation. Grass Valley showed expanded functionality for its Karrera video production center switcher with its Ignite scalable automated production system. By making use of the Ignite Konnect Live Control Room Automation System, users can seamlessly interface the two production solutions and cost-effectively transition to live production automation and benefit from the Ignite system's many technical and resource-saving advantages. With the latest version of Ignite Konnect software and hardware, professionals can use the new Grass Valley Karrera switcher panel to automate their daily newscasts, as well as scripted and unscripted studio productions. This new integration also includes the ability to directly link the Ignite software to a newsroom computer system (NRCS), giving the entire news staff more control and capabilities, as well as improved audio mixing features. Harman International Digital mixing consoles from Studer. Harman showcased the compact Studer Vista 5, which is now offered as the M2 with optional configurable TFT metering (as introduced on Vista 9), which provides mono up to surround signal views on each channel and a unique audio event history function supplementing the acclaimed Vistonics user interface. Studer's Vista 9 digitalc has TFT metering and FaderGlow system, where groups of signals can be quickly identified by assigning different LED colors to the fader module. Studer's digital consoles now form an integrated solution for broadcast with the Studer Relink I/O sharing system. Any mixture of Studer Vista (5, 6, 7, 8 or 9) and OnAir 2500/3000 consoles can now link seamlessly and simply to share resources across a wide network. The OnAir 3000 Continuity console has found great favour in TV production, where the integrated surround capabilities such as SDI de-embedding/re-embedding, Dolby E decoding, delay, automation, and interfaces with ROSS and VCS systems make it a very powerful yet compact console.‚Ä®Also showcased were AKG microphones and headphones, including the DMS-700 digital wireless system, and a range of JBL-powered monitor loudspeakers. Harmonic Inc. Harmonic provides the mission-critical video infrastructure that enables content producers and service providers to create, prepare, and deliver high-quality video services to any device. The complete line of products and solutions increase production capabilities, improve video quality, and achieve ultra-efficient video delivery. For live news and event coverage, the low-latency Ellipse contribution encoders offer high-quality video for professional newsgathering. The Omneon line of active storage and video server systems enable highly efficient digital media production, editing, and playout workflows.‚Ä®For service provider headends, the Harmonic Electra encoders provide the highest video quality and bit-rate efficiency, while the ProStream processing platforms deliver advanced stream processing for secure and efficient content distribution. For multiscreen services, the ProMedia line of file-based and live transcoding, packaging, and web origination products provide scalable delivery of content from virtually any format to the broadest range of destination devices, including connected televisions, computers, and mobile devices. Harmonic cable edge and access solutions, including the market-leading NSG EdgeQAM platform and the SUPRALink 1550 nm transmission system, enable popular services such as VOD and allow operators to continue to expand service offerings over existing networks. Harris At the 2011 IBC show, Harris showcased an array of uniquely scalable, easy-to-operate solutions that support today's multiformat, multichannel, multiplatform broadcast environments. The products showcased at the event include: Selenio media convergence platform. The Selenio media convergence platform combines baseband video and audio processing, compression, and IP networking features - all in a single 3RU frame. Its second-to-none flexibility makes it ideal for any fixed or mobile production environment, broadcast facility, or digital terrestrial redistribution head-end (DVB-T/T2, ATSC, M/H), as well as cable, satellite, and IPTV head-ends. It also provides an on-ramp to the IP world, which one can access it at their own pace. Maxiva UAX compact class. The Maxiva UAX compact class air-cooled UHF solid-state transmitter/transposer/SFN gap-filler incorporates Harris PowerSmart technology and the Apex M2X multimedia exciter to provide today's broadcaster unmatched performance, reliability, and quality. The Maxiva UAX compact class is a single platform available as a transmitter, transposer, or SFN gap-filler for DVB-T/H, DVB-T2, ATSC, ATSC-MDTV, FLOTV, ISDB-Tb, CMMB, CTTB and other emerging digital standards. Complementing Harris' Maxiva UAX medium power series, the Maxiva UAX compact class provides pre-filter power levels from 5W to 50W, in a compact space-saving, 2 RU package. Maxiva UAX compact class utilizes field-proven complementary technologies from several existing Harris products - the Apex M2X multimedia exciter, the Maxiva UAX and ULX series and the Harris PowerSmart design initiative for RF amplification. This powerful blend provides best-in-class performance with respect to size and functionality. NEXIO Farad. Harris introduced NEXIO Farad, a high-performance online storage system ideal for large-scale ingest, editing, and playout for production, sports, news, and live-event applications. Customers in today's production environments face escalating storage and bandwidth requirements due to higher data rate codecs, more channels, more concurrent editing seats, additional camera feeds, 3 Gb/s and the overall volume of content. To address these challenges, NEXIO Farad delivers the highest levels of bandwidth and storage capacity to support even the most demanding multiplatform media delivery workflows. HView IP multiviewer. The Harris HView IP multiviewer is a 1RU IP-based video network display and monitoring solution designed to meet the needs of multichannel broadcasters and headends. This compact multiviewer provides all the monitoring capabilities of an industry-leading baseband multiviewer, but functions in a networked environment where the feeds being monitored are primarily compressed video or audio. The IP-based multiviewer is ideal for operators that use different codecs for different jobs - from high-quality H.264 to lower-bit MPEG-2. Magellan router control panels. The Harris Magellan family of router control panels (RCPs) provides a fast, powerful, and simple way to control Harris or third-party routing systems. Available as a series of 10 programmable hardware panels in 1 or 2RU versions, Magellan RCPs offer intuitive, web-based configuration - enabling the industry's fastest setup for both local and remote operations. Designed with an understanding of the physical layout of a typical facility or OB truck, these compact RCPs - less than 2 inch deep - integrate easily into console-mount or any other space-constrained environment, enabling the user to rapidly optimize the navigation and control of routers. Flexiva VHF FM transmitter. The Harris Flexiva VHF FM solid-state transmitter family provides today's broadcaster with a transmitter platform capable of analog and digital operation. Incorporating field-proven Harris technology, the Flexiva family of products delivers world-class performance, reliability, and quality. Flexiva is designed for low- and high-power requirements, up to 20 kW, while utilizing the most compact design on the market today. Flexiva continues the legacy of the highly successful line of Harris FM transmitters and combines innovative, new Quad-mode RF amplification, and software-defined exciter technology to take FM transmission to the next level. Radio Frequency Systems Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) presented its capabilities, showing precise examples of its activities. RFS delivered an insight into digital switchover (DSO) projects all around the globe. PeakPower+ filter range. RFS' PeakPower+ filters safely sustain the very high peak power requirement of digital television (DTV). As a result, broadcasters can expect fewer system shutdowns and increased revenue through the safe addition and diversification of digital channels and services within their existing infrastructure. The filters feature a compact design that makes it easy to integrate them into existing equipment, plus a very low insertion loss and the highest power rating. PCP and PEP broadband UHF panel array antennas. These antennae feature variable polarization technology (VPT) for individually-configurable polarization ratios as well as customizable, cylindrical radomes. Heliflex lite connectors and high-power Heliflex cables. These connectors offer rigorously-tested mechanical integrity, extremely low loss and an attractive price/performance ratio to support the ramp-up of next-generation digital broadcast services in Europe and around the world. Rohde & Schwarz Solutions from Rohde & Schwarz cover all T&M requirements in the development, quality assurance, and production of broadcast receivers, set-top boxes, or TV sets. R&S SFC compact modulator. It is a universal signal source for testing broadcast receivers and components. It can handle all established analog and digital broadcast standards, including DVB-T2. The R&S SFC has a frequency range up to 3 GHz and offers high signal quality, such as a modulation error ratio (MER) of typically more than 40 dB. Designed for integration into test systems, the energy-efficient R&S SFC requires little space. R&S EFL240 and R&S EFL340 TV test receivers. These receivers feature compact design and easy operation. They enable installation personnel to reliably measure the quality of cable, satellite, and terrestrial signals for cable TV systems and in-building distribution systems. The R&S EFL340 even supports DVB-T2. The R&S SFC and the R&S EFL340 ideally expand the Rohde¬†&¬†Schwarz DVB-T2 product portfolio, making it easy for network operators and manufacturers to switch over to the latest digital TV generation. Roland Systems Group Roland Systems Group (RSG) is dedicated to the support of audio and video professionals demanding excellence in both performance and system design. RSG is committed to providing unique solutions to improve workflow and maximize creative possibilities. The company offers various broadcasting solutions. An array of products were showcased at the event by RSG including production switchers and studio vision mixers, portable recorders, recording and storage, headphones, monitors and loudspeakers, audio mixers, audio workstations, editing and effects software, format converters, and interface products. Seachange India The company provides innovative, Emmy award-winning solutions and services for back office, advertising, content, in-home devices, and broadcast to hundreds of media companies. Nitro multiscreen user interface software. The software enables video operators to provide consumers with a consistent look and feel as they navigate and manage linear and on-demand content across mobile, PC, tablet, and TV screens. SeaChange Nitro is the consumer face of multiscreen video, leveraging HTML5 to give users intuitive features and functionality for controlling video content on any screen they choose. Key Nitro features include support for linear and on-demand video viewing, multi-room DVR, virtual channels, TV listings, bookmarking, search and recommendation, and handheld-as-a-remote capability, the latter transforming enabled mobile devices into in-home remote controls. The Nitro experience transcends devices, allowing operators to maintain a common look and feel across any screen their subscribers use. Sennheiser Electronics Sennheiser showcased its pro audio portfolio, highlighting the analog and digital RF condenser microphones of Sennheiser's renowned MKH Series. MKH 8060 and MKH 8070 shotgun microphones. Both microphones can be used in analog set-ups or - in combination with the MZD 8000 digital module - as digital AES42 microphones. The very compact MKH 8060 is a versatile short-gun microphone, equally at home on or off camera, while the long MKH 8070 rifle microphone is a specialist for more distant sound sources and is the perfect choice for sports reporting and nature recordings. Both models feature a natural and very lifelike sound, as off-axis sound is attenuated without coloration. Their radiofrequency condenser principle also makes both microphones extremely weather-resistant, ensuring that they can cope even with climatically difficult conditions, such as extreme cold and moisture. Tata showcased an array of products at the event including android-based hybrid STB integrated with Marlin DRM, H.264 HP hardware encoder and decoder, connected TV applications developed on Panasonic Viera connect TV, and online digital asset, and workflow management tool. Telemetrics Inc. The company's specialized products include camera remote control, camera robotics, and transmission systems. At the event was showcased CoaxLink camera control unit and PT-RM-1 camera robotics tilt head. Viacess Viacess is a leading innovative provider of IPTV middleware and applications. Wohler Technologies Wohler demonstrated the company's full range of signal management and confidence monitoring solutions for video, audio, captioning, and loudness applications.
