Case Study Creation of Common FM Transmission Infrastructure (CTI) at Kingsway, Delhi

Project : Creation of Common FM Transmission Infrastructure (CTI) at Kingsway, Delhi

Industry : Turnkey industry

Vender : BECIL

Details of the Project : The project at Kingsway, Delhi required design, procurement and erection of a 149 m tower in the absence of the availability of a readymade tower of Prasar Bharati, which by itself is a time consuming exercise. Creation of Common Transmission Infrastructures (CTIs) has been one of the major activities of BECIL during FM Phase-II taking into account the enormity of the size and spread of various projects involving 87 cities with 245 channels as also the time bound requirement of their completion as per the Government stipulations.

Requirements of CTIs

Setting up of Common Transmission Infrastructure (CTIs) meant combing the outputs of various transmitters through the combiners and feeding the combined output to the antenna system via the feeder cables and patch panel. The main elements of the CTI were combiners, antenna system, rf feeder cable and accessories, antenna switch frame and rigid lines and accessories.

Besides the RF components that were required, there was also a need for the creation of some infrastructure for CTI which included earthing systems, air-conditioning arrangements, technical furniture, fir fighting equipment and civil works to house CTI as also for licensees individual transmitters. Also, there was a need for the creation of a power supply system for the total setup including the requirements of individual licensee's transmitters.

Advantages gained by the broadcasters

There were a number of advantages that were gained by the broadcasters by utilizing the services of BECIL. Some of them included saving the lengthy process of site selection, acquisition and SACFA clearance, lower capital outlay for each broadcaster, centralized operation and maintenance. Also, they had a site advantage of being located within the city.
